The current building is not original. It is a reconstruction dating from the late 19th century. In front of the palace are two huge equestrian statues of Emperors Friedrich Barbarossa and Wilhelm I. The vaulted cellar houses a museum with exhibits about the traveling Imperial court during the Middle Ages as well as Romanesque and Gothic architectural ornaments. Of special note are the Romanesque Kaiserstuhl (Emperor’s Chair) and the 13th-century Goslar Reichsadler (Imperial Eagle). A copy of the eagle is on the Markt. On the main floor of the palace is the huge Kaisersaal (Imperial Hall). It has a series of paintings illustrating the glory days when the Emperors frequented the town. It also has a smaller series of paintings illustrating the fairy tale Dornröschen (Sleeping Beauty). A door at the far end of this hall leads to the St Ulrich Chapel – once private chapel of the emperor and still housing the heart of Heinrich III.
